Moo! - The herd mentality.
How often do you walk down a busy urban street and hear moos coming from every direction and think there is a stampede? The moos that constantly fill our ears are the lies the world. If your focus is that this world is all there is to life, then you are saying there is no God. As a christian this can slip into your thinking without you noticing when you don’t examine the assumptive reasoning that forms the base of what they promote. When compromise fills your thinking, confusion is the result.
When lies are exposed for what they are in the light of truth, only a fool would continue to believe the lie. Since the world does not want to expose itself, it employs deceptive means to deceive itself into believing that what it believes is not a lie. One way that is accomplished is by constantly repeating the lie to lend an air of authority to the lie. This happens all the time when children are taught an edited version of history. So when a generation grows up believing a lie and acts upon it, all manner of evil is the result. When we examine the mentality of this world, we find an abundance of division and evil. This is reflected in what Jesus said, "Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and any city or house divided against itself will not stand. If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand?” (Matthew 12:25-26) To embrace the world’s way of thinking, is to embrace darkness which is opposed to God. If something is of God, it will stand for it is truth.
Let’s consider a couple of examples of the herd mentality that leads people away from God.
Global warming is popular topic that demonstrates the herd mentality that leads to denying God. I am not debating the merits or actuality of climate change, but the attitude behind why people follow the cause. Those who champion global warming usually do so because they are motivated by the attitude that life only consists of our physical existence and once we screw it up, we as a species will become extinct. This is completely opposite of what God has testified in the scriptures which means these two points of view are diametrically opposed. There is no way to reconcile the mentality that says we must save ourselves because no one else will do it with God’s promise of a new heaven and a new earth. Also, there is no way to completely clean up the earth because it has fallen under the curse of sin and therefore it is a never ending battle. No matter how hard people try, they will never come close to approaching the utopia they espouse. Ask yourself if you really want to be dragged along by that assumptive reasoning of the herd running in complete opposition to God’s promises.
In the U.S.A. there are two major political parties called Democrats and Republicans. Again, I am not concerned with what each party stands for, but the underlying attitude. Clearly the Democrats and Republicans are diametrically opposed to each other and this is exemplified by the political grid lock that exists in Washington. Over the years each party has moved into a position where it defines itself in terms relative to the other party. Whatever the other party stands for, it will take a stance that is opposed. The two parties are locked into a death match where having control over the other party is more important than following the truth. Both parties have lost their anchors to the ultimate truth of God and now drift aimlessly in the darkness. The question to ask here is what compromises are being made in your relationship to God by embracing views that clearly violate the scriptures? Truth is not defined by the relative positions of the Democrats to the Republicans, but truth is defined by God alone.
The apostle Paul wrote, “If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus for merely human reasons, what have I gained? If the dead are not raised, ‘Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.’ Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’ Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God—I say this to your shame.” (1 Corinthians 15:32-34) If you associate yourself with a group or cause that denies God and His ways, you place yourself in the position of potentially corrupting yourself.
We are surrounded by a swirling mass of lies continually seducing us to come and embrace its assumptive reasoning. As christians we have to carefully examine what we are buying into when we join ourselves to a cause or movement because we can easily find ourselves in a compromising position. That compromise is not between us and other men, but between us and God! Anything that gets between us and God is pure foolishness. Following the herd mentality of this world will lead you away from God for the world loves the lies it tells and all lies lead to emptiness. Jesus said, “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14) Judge for yourself, does the herd mentality of this world travel the narrow way to the truth or the broad way to destruction?
