Nostradamus - What’s in a name?
Nostradamus is a man who lived from 1503 to 1566. He wrote a thousand quatrains (four line poems) in a book called “The Prophecies.” Over the centuries people have been examining his work and trying to apply it to reality. Even christians have been attaching themselves to his words. The question to ask here is what Nostradamus wrote from God? Is it truth?
The apostle Paul wrote, “Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterances. But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:19-21) Nostradamus’ writings are no different and we must examine it carefully before we take it in as truth. Many christians have attempted to justify it as truth, but they have done so with a bias that lacks objectivity. In a sense, they are being led by their own nose! Wherever their nose points, that must be the truth. This is a poor way to examine such a thing and is arrogant.
When I was a young christian, I also heard of these predictions and I was faced with the choice of what to do with them. So I asked God about Nostradamus’ prophecies and God spoke to me and said, “In whose name does he prophesy?” This is a very profound question because it gets to the very root of the issue. Throughout the bible God always attaches His name to His words and there is no doubt as to who spoke them. This is not the case with Nostradamus and that leaves us with two choices which include, he is just speaking from his own mind or the devil has inspired these writings. It is moot point to debate if it is just from his own mind or from the devil because the result is the same which is lies and confusion. So we have an established standard in the scriptures that shows that God attaches His name to His words and this automatically disqualifies what Nostradamus wrote as being from God. This does not mean that everything spoken in the name of God is from God, but the fact it is not spoken in His name means we can easily toss it aside and move on.
If you are a christian and you have given credence in your mind to the words of Nostradamus and you are reading these words and rejecting them, you need to consider what the apostle Paul said about the coming anti-christ and those who follow him.
Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming; that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved. For this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false, in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness. (2 Thessalonians 2:8-12)
The important thing to grasp here is God sent a deluding influence upon them so that they will believe what is false because they rejected the truth. When we reject truth and we know it is the truth, it is an invitation to have a deluding influence (darkness, lies, and the demonic) come upon us. That is a door we need to close and we now have an opportunity to examine these things for truth. With Nostradamus, in whose name did he prophecy is the most important question we need to answer.
